Festiwal im. Zygmunta Haupta | Zygmunt Haupt Festival » NEWS http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl Wed, 29 Aug 2018 14:27:04 +0000 en-US hourly 1 THE 3RD ZYGMUNT HAUPT FESTIVAL — PROGRAM http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/news/the-3rd-zygmunt-haupt-festival-program/ http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/news/the-3rd-zygmunt-haupt-festival-program/#comments Mon, 11 Sep 2017 21:00:00 +0000 http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/?p=5281 For the third time we wish to invite you to Gorlice for the Zygmunt Haupt Festival. The program includes topical and auteur meetings, as well as concerts.

ZYGMUNT HAUPT — the greatest of the inequitably forgotten Polish authors, he has a separate place in Polish literature, his artistic input remains almost unprecedented. Writer, painter, architect, journalist. Born in 1907 in Podolia, died in 1975 in Winchester (USA). Haupt’s stories, always written in a first-person form of soliloquy, are made up of overlapping images, dense frames sketched within the imagination of a writer and painter. One episode was all he ever needed to enter a mysterious reality where the past blends with the present, and the places that are real with those imagined and remembered. The fragile, elusive, and ephemeral fuses with the permanent and the all-human.

ANDRZEJ STASIUK (ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF THE FESTIVAL) remembers his first encounter with the works of Zygmunt Haupt as follows: “It was the first Polish literature, the first Polish writing, that struck at my heart so deeply, and  since then never have I come across works so incisive, so beautiful in Polish literature.”

Every day of the festival will offer TOPICAL MEETINGS concerning the life and works of the Festival patron. Gorlice will be visited by researchers focusing on Haupt’s works: prof. Aleksander Madyda, Andrzej Niewiadomski PhD, and Paweł Panas PhD. There will also be special guests: prof. Lajos Pálfalvi (head of the Department of Polish Studies at the Pázmány Péter Catholic University in Budapest, translator of Polish literature, winner of the 2017 Transatlantyk Award), Paweł Sołtys, alias Pablopavo (singer, songwriter, and journalist), as well as Arthur Haupt (the author’s son).

Taking into account the participation in the development of the Polish literary scene, the promotion of reading and valuable phenomena in contemporary literature, we have planned a series of AUTEUR MEETINGS. Since Haupt’s works combine poetic sensitivity, prose imaginativeness, and journalistic mindfulness, each of these genres will leave a trace in the Festival’s program. Gorlice will hold auteur meetings with the following authors:: Waldemar Bawołek, Ádám Bodor (Hungary), Małgorzata Czyńska, Weronika Gogola, Aldona Kopkiewicz, Antoni Kroh, Karol Maliszewski, Bronka Nowicka, Michał Olszewski, Marcin Sendecki, Żanna Słoniowska, Ziemowit Szczerek, Varujan Vosganian (Romania).

The auteur and topical meetings will be moderated by: Wojciech Bonowicz, prof. Aleksander Madyda, Karol Maliszewski, Paweł Panas PhD, Monika Rogowska-Stangret PhD, Andrzej Stasiuk, Monika Stopczyk.

We also have good news for all book addicts. During the festival, Gorlice’s bookstore Mieszko will be selling books written by our guests.

This year’s program also includes CONCERTS. The Festival will open musically with Pablopavo — winner of the Paszport Polityki award (2014), an artist known from such groups and projects such as: Vavamuffin, Zjednoczenie Sound System, and Pablopavo i Ludziki. The Hungarian band Göncölszekér will present material from their album Izrael földjén (In the Land of Israel), which includes pieces composed to poems by Paul Celan, Nelly Sachs, and Osip Mandelsztam. The final concert will be that of Jacek Kleyff — legend of Polish counter-culture, a charismatic individual and witty erudite.

The festival is organised by the Academic Office of Culture and Art Alma-Art, the Stanisław Gabryel City Library in Gorlice, the Gorlice City Council, and the Czarne Publishing House.

The Festival program is available in the DOWNLOADS tab. The Festival takes place on September 21st-24th 2017 at the Stanisław Gabryel City Library in Gorlice as well as the Gorlice Culture Centre. Admission to all events is free.

A NEW EDITION OF “BASQUE DEVIL” http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/news/a-new-edition-of-basque-devil/ http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/news/a-new-edition-of-basque-devil/#comments Thu, 31 Mar 2016 21:50:35 +0000 http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/?p=3841 This year the Zygmunt Haupt Festival will be smaller than last year (as it will not be funded by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage – MKiDN), but it will be added splendour to by the new edition of Zygmunt Haupt’s “Basque Devil” edited by prof. Aleksander Madyda.

Since the previously printed edition of works by Zygmunt Haupt had long been sold out, the Czarne Publishing House has decided to finance a re-edition of the “Basque Devil” collection, edited anew by prof. Aleksander Madyda: www.bit.ly/czarne-baskijski-diabel. The book was published on May 25th 2016, also in e-book form. Our festival, therefore, is bringing very measurable results. Finally everyone interested, every Haupt-lover will have the chance to enjoy his stories and reportages.

The current edition of Haupt’s prose contains its most correct form, and at the same time one closest to the author’s intention. The introduction to the collection was written by Andrzej Stasiuk, artistic director of the Zygmunt Haupt Festival: “The weave of thoughts and things in Zygmunt Haupt’s prose creates a fabric so dense that one’s faculty of reason becomes helpless and, in addition to that, completely redundant. (…) The imagined and the expressed become interwoven in the matter of language which, I dare say, has no equal in 20th century Polish literature.”

We also wish to remind you about the difficult situation of the festival, which results from the fact that we have not received funding from MKiDN. Our score enabled us to reapply, again with a negative result.

The situation is difficult but we do not want to give up. We will inform you about any changes in the situation via our website and via Facebook.

THE 2ND ZYGMUNT HAUPT FESTIVAL – PROGRAM http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/news/the-2nd-zygmunt-haupt-festival-program/ http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/en/news/the-2nd-zygmunt-haupt-festival-program/#comments Tue, 06 Sep 2016 20:10:03 +0000 http://www.festiwalhaupta.pl/?p=4162 For the second time we wish to invite you to Gorlice for the Zygmunt Haupt Festival. The program includes topical meetings, meetings with authors, concerts, and a presentation of photographs from the author’s family archive.

Zygmunt Haupt is the greatest of the inequitably forgotten Polish writers of the 20th century. During the Festival we endeavour to exhibit the legitimacy of this statement, and to bring back the memory of his works and biography. The entire event is guided by the words of Andrzej Stasiuk, the Artistic Director, whose invitation to the first edition of this Gorlice event postulated: “It is time fot Haupt to come back.”

Following the idea quoted above, each day the festival will hold topical meetings with researchers and invited guests. Gorlice will once again host prof. Aleksander Madyda, Andrzej Niewiadomski, PhD, and Paweł Panas, PhD, who will talk about Zygmut Haupt’s place in 20th century Polish literature and about the unique literary language of this author. These meetings will, at the same time, constitute a great opportunity to present a new edition of “Basque devil,” which was published this year by the Czarne Publishing House, edited by prof. Aleksander Madyda.

The “Writer’s Archive” and “Reception” meetings look equally promising. The guest of the former will be Barbara Krupa — Curator for Slavic and East European Collections at Stanford University — who has custody over the entire American archive of Zygmunt Haupt’s works. The topic of the latter meeting will be the reception of the writer’s works in Germany and the issues connected with translating his works into German. The guests of the meeting will be: Esther Kinsky (writer, poet, translator) and Katharina Raabe (publisher and editor).

The second goal of the festival is participating in the development of the Polish literary scene, promoting reading as well as valuable phenomena of contemporary literature. Therefore, during the four days of the festival there will be a number of meetings with authors whose works can be inscribed into the horizon established by Zygmunt Haupt; on the basis of the chosen topic, or the proposed literary language – we invite authors whose literary output is not only telling stories, but also, or maybe most importantly, creating a language. Moreover, since Haupt’s work combines the sensitivity of poetry, the imagination of prose, and the attentiveness of reportage, each of these genres will mark its presence in the program of the Festival.

Gorlice will hold meetings with the following authors: Michał Cichy, Urszula Honek, Magdalena Kicińska, Esther Kinsky, Maroš Krajňak, Andrzej Muszyński, Piotr Nesterowicz, Klara Nowakowska, Andrzej Stasiuk, Krzysztof Środa, Adam Wiedemann, Zofia Zaleska. The moderators of the auteur meetings and topical meetings will be: Darek Foks, Bartłomiej Kiełtyka, Kamila Margielska, Andrzej Niewiadomski, PhD, Michał Olszewski, Paweł Panas, PhD, Monika Rogowska-Stangret, PhD, Monika Stopczyk.

We also have good news for all book addicts. During the festival, Gorlice’s book-store Księgarnia Mieszko will have a dedicated bookstall with our guests’ books.

The Festival in Gorlice also includes other art forms. We will open with Kuba Jaworski’s concert, namely Gypsy and the Acid Queen. In his creative work vast space meets detail, and one sound can change the impression the music makes on the audience. It seems that the artist’s imagination wanders the same areas as Haupt’s imagination. We will finish with an exceptional film-literary-musical project “Tutaj” (“Here”). The screening of the film by Kamil Gubała will be accompanied by: Andrzej Stasiuk (reading Zygmunt Haupt’s prose) and Piotr Bukowski (improvising on guitar).

The Festival is organised by the Academic Office of Culture and Art Alma Art, the Stanisław Gabryel Municipal Public Library in Gorlice, and the Czarne Publishing House. The event would not have been possible without the help from this year’s partners: the Goethe Institute in Cracow, the Slovak Institute in Warsaw, the Książkowe Klimaty Publishing House, the Gorlice Culture Centre, the Lemko Union, and Dark Pub in Gorlice.

The Festival program is available for download HERE. The Festival will take place on September 23th–26th 2016. Admission to all events is free.
